Austin Humanists at Work Extend a Helping Hand…Happy New Year! This is your January recap!

Even though it’s January, we were treated to some favorable weather for our giveaway this Sunday. Many of our volunteers wore jackets, but the temps were in the 50s and the line started forming early.

We were well staffed with over 50 smiling, kind volunteers that served 176 individuals that passed through our line. The Austin Ethical Society were on hand to provide coffee, and Gerardo Garza came armed with delicious BBQ sandwiches to pass out at the end of the line.
Adjacent to our setup, a community church came to hand out clothes and basic living supplies too. A few of their volunteers told us they really admire how organized we are. We told them it was lots of experience and a great group of volunteers. Seriously…our giveaways are conducted without guarantee of location, in all weather, and unknown participation levels. I always tell folks we’re a well organized flash mob…and we keep coming back for more.
And the giveaways couldn’t be successful without the help of so many people. In addition to our donors (that send along items from our Amazon wish list as well as cash), our volunteers always step up and make things work well. Our regular volunteers are always appreciated, but we love seeing new volunteers come out to help.
We’d like to thank several groups that helped us out today:
- Students from UT’s School of Pharmacy
- Members from the Ethical Society of Austin
- Members from the Live Oak Unitarian Universalist Youth Group
- If we missed anyone, let us know…we’ll give you a shout out
Next giveaway is February 23rd…we hope to see you then.
