Hello everyone!
Summer is in full swing, and as usual, we Texans are feelin’ hot, hot, hot! This is especially true for our clients, who don’t always have the option to get out of the heat (and rain). That’s why the volunteers of Austin Humanists at Work remain committed to getting essential living items into the hands of those who need them the most!
This month, we are completely out of three of our summer staples: sunscreen, tissues, and cold packs. We are also out of condoms, lip balm, body wipes, and our most popular item, men’s underwear. We also have several more items on our green light list this month. Please visit our What Do We Need? page to see everything we do and don’t need. All of these items (and more!) are available for purchase on our Amazon wish list.
Four Ways to Help Our Community!
One of the most common questions we get asked is, “What’s the best way help out?” Here are our suggestions:
1) Donate items: Clean out your closets, purchase items at a local store, or purchase items on our Amazon wish list.
2) Make a financial donation: Monetary donations enable us to make bulk purchases, which often have a lower per-item cost than purchasing a few items at a time.
3) Volunteer your time: Come to a giveaway and hand out items – it’s a great way to spend a morning! Or, if you’re crafty, knit or crochet scarves, hats, or cotton washcloths as part of our Gettin’ Knotty group.
4) Share our info: We are on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Follow us, tag us, share our posts! Tell your neighbors what we need the most on NextDoor. Email our website to your friends.
We can’t all do everything, but if we all do a little, we can accomplish a lot!
Have you been to a Gettin’ Knotty meetup?
We may be a little biased, but we think GK is a pretty great group. Each month, our dedicated crafters create cotton washcloths, hats, and scarves for the people that we serve. The cotton washcloths get compliments each and every month. In the winter, the hats and scarves fly off the tables!
If you’d like to make some fabulous knotty friends, make plans to attend this month’s Gettin’ Knotty meetup! The group will be in the cafe area of Barnes & Noble in the Arboretum from 7 PM to 10 PM on Thursday, July 12. You can also drop off donations at the GK meetup.
