Hi everyone!
It’s already time for the last giveaway of the year. Last December, we received a record-breaking 7,259 items. Will we top that this year? We can with your help! Here’s 5 ways to donate to ATXHAW:
1) Visit our Amazon wish list. Your purchase will be shipped directly to us!
2) Purchase items in-store or online (or clean out your closets!), and drop them off in our donation bin at Pak Mail on Metric Blvd.
3) Donate funds via PayPal
4) Knit or crochet washcloths, hats, and scarves with ATXHAW’s Gettin’ Knotty Group
5) Donate your time by volunteering at the next giveaway
What Do We Need?
This month, we are completely out of first aid kits, men’s underwear, nail clippers, toothbrush covers, and insect repellent. There are also several other items that we are low on, including toilet paper, men’s socks, women’s underwear, and lotion. To see a full list of what we do (and don’t) need, please visit our What Do We Need page.
The ATXHAW Warmth Drive continues! Temperatures have already dipped below freezing here in central Texas, and there have been several days where we have had cold rain with the low temperatures. Over 800 people in our area sleep outside on many of those nights. You can help them keep warm by donating new or gently used warm clothing, blankets, and sleeping bags/mats.
Since our giveaway is on Christmas Eve, we will also have a food table set up! We will be giving away baked goods and breakfast tacos. We also need volunteers with a food handlers certificate to hand out the goodies. If you’re interested, please sign up here.
Volunteer With These Awesome Organizations!
Austin ECHO is looking for volunteers for their 2018 Point In Time Count on Saturday, January 27, 2018. The Point In Time Count is an annual census of people experiencing homelessness in the Austin area. Each year, over 600 volunteers survey areas of Austin/Travis County in order to better understand homelessness. Could you be one of those people? Maybe you’ve got great leadership skills, and could serve as a team lead! Visit the Austin ECHO website to sign up and learn more.
St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church needs volunteers to help on nights when the Cold Weather Shelter system is activated. The Cold Weather Shelter system is a network of churches and community volunteers that provide extra shelter space on nights where the temperature falls below freezing. Dinner volunteers are needed from 6 PM to 9 PM, and overnight volunteers are needed from 9 PM to 7 AM. If you’d like to volunteer, please contact Ed Kopas at edwardkopas@yahoo.com or 512-659-9880.
Gettin’ Knotty
Want to keep your cat away from your yarn? Bring the yarn and yourself to ATXHAW’s knit and crochet group, Gettin’ Knotty!
The group will meet this Thursday (December 21), from 7 PM to 10 PM in the cafe area of the Barnes & Noble in the Arboretum. GK volunteers create handmade items such as hats, scarves, and cotton washcloths, which are handed out at ATXHAW’s monthly giveaways.
We hope you are having a nice weekend! Thanks for reading. See you on the 24th!
