We moved our last giveaway of the year to coincide with Christmas Eve to help those in need…and there were quite a few. Here’s the last giveaway recap of 2017!
As we approached the end of the year, we wondered if we would get something that passes for winter weather for our last giveaway. Thankfully, it was cooler, but not icy as predicted by the weatherman. The temperature when we started hovered in the 40s, but quickly climbed to the low 60s when we finished up.
For this special giveaway, our donors and volunteers graciously helped us out with their donations and their time. We had a healthy supply of our normal items (basic living supplies) as well as the added treat of donuts, breakfast tacos and coffee. Luckily, we a great showing from our volunteers (approximately 40 on Christmas Eve!) to help out a steady stream of fellow humans.
For those who haven’t been to a giveaway, we meet in the parking lot under Interstate 35 close to the Police Station on 7th Street. Normally, there are other groups that come down regularly to help individuals experiencing homelessness in their own way. We’ve seen churches, clubs and dentistry outreach organizations set up tables to serve meals, hand out information or give away clothes. This Sunday was no exception. However, it seemed as more groups arrived, we had an increase in the number of individuals lining up for our giveaway.
When we started counting, we only had around 40 go through our line in the first 15 minutes. By the time we shut the line down (at around 10am), we had served 191!
Thanks again to all of our donors and volunteers. This was a great giveaway an a great year! You’re truly making a difference in the lives of the vulnerable and we look forward to seeing you all in 2018!
