Hi everyone! We hope you’re staying warm this month!
Speaking of staying warm, did you know that in Travis county there are over 800 people that are unsheltered every night? This means that while many people get a shelter beds, over 800 sleep outside (uncovered or in tents), in their cars, or even public restrooms. There are simply not enough shelter beds for all of those in need here in Austin. So we have added a few things to our Amazon wish list to help them stay warm during the coldest months of the year, such as sleeping bags, hand warmers, emergency blankets, and sleeping mats.
For a complete list of what we need the most, please see our Traffic Light!
We are also running our Warmth Drive again this year! We are accepting sleeping bags, sleeping mats, blankets, hats, scarves, gloves/mittens, and warm clothing such as sweatshirts, sweatpants, thermals, jackets, coats, and sweaters. New or gently used, please.
If you’d like to spread the word about the ATXHAW Warmth Drive, here are some fliers to print. Tack them up on community bulletin boards, in local businesses, or hand them out to friends & family.
If you’re the crafty type, and you’d like to make some hats or scarves, come to the Gettin’ Knotty meetup! We’ll be meeting at Barnes & Noble in the Arboretum (cafe area) from 7 to 10 PM on Thursday, December 22. We are also happy to help you learn to knit or crochet.
We are happy to announce that our Just Because bags are returning for the holiday season! How do you make a Just Because bag? Get a paper bag and decorate it with jokes, games, or quotes – this is a great activity for the kids! Then fill them with treats (edible and non-edible), such as: crossword puzzle, sudoku, and word find books, pens, playing cards, gum, candy, beef jerky, peanut butter crackers, flashlights… all kinds of things!
If you are in the Austin area, and would like to make a donation, please contact our donations coordinator for pick up arrangements. We have volunteers all around the Austin area that will be happy to pick up your items. You can also bring your donation to the giveaway! We ask that you bring a list of what you’re donating with your name and email, so that we can log your donation accurately (we will NOT share your info with anyone!).
If you’re not in the Austin area, please visit our Amazon wish list. Your donation will be shipped directly to us.
Would you like to mail in a donation? Awesome! Our mailing address is:

Hello Laura,
I’m Angela, and I would like to volunteer this Christmas. I have a couple of restaurants interested in donating food that are located right there downtown.
Can you call me so I’m clear on everything.
Angela
