In the meantime, here’s a guide to what’s needed for April 19th:
Red Light. We have plenty of these items and don’t need more right now: soap/body wash, tissues, feminine hygiene (pads, tampons, pantyliners), conditioner, lip balm
Yellow Light. We probably have enough of these items to make it through this giveaway: shampoo, body lotion, emergency blankets. hand sanitizer, razors, unisex socks
Green Light. We really need these items: body wipes, dental supplies (travel toothbrushes, toothpaste, floss), deodorant, toilet paper, first aid kits (store-bought or homemade, no medicine in the kits, please), men’s underwear, women’s underwear, t-shirts (especially L & XL), insect repellent, sun screen
Special thanks to the Perspectives in Atheism class at St. Edward’s University for their recent donation and their hospitality. For a second year, ATXAHH was invited to speak with students about our goals and efforts. This year, Rev. Jim Rigby of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church joined the conversation. The topic was “Secular Humanism as an ethical philosophy.” We were asked to tell our stories about our mission/calling to help others, one from a faith-based perspective and one from a humanist perspective. We received wonderful questions from the students and had the opportunity to share news of our tandem efforts to serve people who are homeless. This past winter, ATXAHH volunteers worked alongside St. Andrew’s members during all ten of their Cold Weather Shelter nights (nights when temperatures fall below freezing).
We’d also like to welcome two new Atheists Helping the Homeless groups: Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Kamloops, British Columbia. Special thanks to the Friendly Atheist for sharing this exciting news. If you’d like to see if there’s a group in your area, or are interested in starting your own, check out the Atheists Helping the Homeless portal site.
