Welcome to our giveaways! This information is to help you know more about what we do and why we do it.
OUR GOAL is simple goals: give humanists a place they can come help their community with other like-minded individuals and allow people in need to receive assistance without any preaching or expectation of something in return for what they receive. We truly mean, “no strings attached”.
OUR EXPECTATION is for everyone (volunteers and recipients) to be civil to one another, both in conversation and in terms of physical space. We expect safety in all forms for everyone: physical, verbal, emotional, faith/nonfaith. If you notice someone who disagrees with this expectation, immediately notify one of the Section Leaders (someone wearing a yellow bandana) and it will be addressed.
OUR BOUNDARIES are clear. We don’t give money, provide transportation or share personal contact information. If someone asks where they can find assistance for a particular issue, let them know dialing 211 is the best way to find resources. United Way manages the 211 database that has current information on all the services available throughout Austin, from medical care, housing needs, financial assistance and everything in between.
OUR VOLUNTEERS are awesome! You might find yourself doing any of these tasks:
- Working the tables: If you work at the tables, please remember the rule of thumb: One item per person.We usually see 100+ people in line so we want to make sure there’s something for everyone. If someone wants “seconds” or wants to grab an item for a friend, they’ll need to return to the end of the line and go through again.
- Helping to sort toiletries: You may be asked to work the Sorting Table and ensure that the bins remain full until we run out of a particular item.
- Monitoring the Clothing Island: Some volunteers make sure the clothing area remains somewhat manageable, help people look for items and pack it up when the giveaway is done.
- Maintaining the perimeter: We ask a few volunteers to stand behind the scenes to make sure people don’t walk up behind the line and to direct people to where the line begins.
We wrap up by 10:00 AM and like to take a volunteer group photo so please stick around if you’d like to be in it. It’s optional. Note: Any photos taken may appear on our social media sites. If you do not want your photo to appear on our social media sites, please let us know and we’ll do everything possible to accommodate you. You’re also invited to join us for brunch on the patio at Central Market North (Lamar and 38th) immediately after the giveaway. We hope you’ll enjoy the experience enough to come back next month.
