Texas summer heat was in full force during the June giveaway, which is why we meet as early as we do at 9 a.m.

Heading toward 100 degrees, the day started off hot and muggy. About 30 volunteers came out on Sunday, Father’s Day, to put out everything we collected since our last giveaway in May. Approximately 165 individuals stood in line to get some personal care items, books, clothing and so much more.  We don’t have a final count yet but, we also gave away a huge amount of bras from the “Bra Drive” we held last month. Keep a lookout on our Facebook for updates about our next July giveaway and upcoming events and special drives.

Since 2014 we have grown our selection to include a wide array of items. Many items we include we added to the giveaway line because someone at our giveaways suggested them or asked specifically based on their needs. Austin Humanists at Work thanks our fabulous donors who have helped maintain such a demanding list of items.

Summertime is not only hot outside but donations become pretty light, though we serve the same amount of people every month. Currently we are very low on or completely out of many items including underwear, sunscreen and bug spray. We could really use a boost for our July and August giveaways. We try to make donating easy for everyone. We have an array of volunteers who can pick up items from you (email donations@austinhumanistsatwork.org to arrange a pickup time and place); we have a few locations for drop off; and we even have an Amazon Wishlist where you can easily purchase items and ship them straight to us.

We get asked a lot, “What can we do to help?” — Please, share our posts and information on Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, via email and neighborhood listservs. Our ability to support people who are experiencing homelessness relies heavily on word of mouth.  Please like us on Facebook and message there or email us at info@austinhumanistsatwork.org if you have any questions.

Want to experience a giveaway? Join us July 16th, 8:40 a.m. set up time, 9 a.m. start time. It goes very quickly and we are usually in and out in an hour.

We can’t thank everyone enough for your ongoing support! Everyone we serve greatly appreciates your donations!  Stay cool out there.
